Team Principles

Setting the principles of the team obviously has to be done by the team itself. So this page will be editable, at least for a while until a critical mass of people have joined on and contributed to this discussion.

Certainly the principles that we emphasize here should be already integral to ourselves (we must legitimately already hold these values) and be principles that help us build the culture described below.

So for starter principles, I submit that we let the following lights guide us:

  • Personal Integrity
  • Stewardship. We are in a sense our brother's keeper, and must do what we can to help those in trouble.
  • Humility. No one has all of the answers. Anyone may have part of an answer

Team Culture

We have set out to improve human decision making. This is a very tall order, and the only way we will be able to make any progress is if we get many people passionate about our cause. So it is in our enlightened self interest (and also just a function of who we are) that we cultivate and maintain a culture that has the following attributes:

  • A Welcoming Culture - We will seek to make anyone interested in our project feel immediately accepted and at home with us.
  • A Culture of Mutual Respect - Members of our community will be diverse. These differences will make us stronger, but to function effectively together we must all respect each other. Everyone comes from a different set of experiences that has shaped their views, and while we may not always agree on things, we should respect the fact that we have all come here to help try to make the world better.
  • A Culture of Gratitude - We will appreciate the contributions of all people. All work is work, and when people donate their time to us, it is gift to be cherished.

Technical details of how we run the project (modular well-documented code, functioning mailings lists, etc.) will improve over time. But our core community will flourish only if we treat people well.

In all communications and interactions, we should seek to project what at core we have: a welcoming culture of mutual respect and gratitude.
